The Real Haggadah

FOR PESACH RESOURCES SEE
www.nefesh.org.au/pesach

WHICH HAGGADAH ARE YOU READING?

Rabbi Yisroel Taub of Modzhitz (1849–1920)once said, there are actually two versions of the Haggadah.

One is the familiar story we tell every Pesach, of G-d's miracles for the Jewish people when we left Egypt.

But there is another Haggadah, G-d's Haggadah. Just as we read our Haggadah on Seder night, so G-d reads His Haggadah. And it is completely different to ours.

G-d's Haggadah doesn't speak of the miracles He made for the Jews. G-d's Haggadah tells of the miracles the Jewish people make themselves. Just as our Haggadah describes the mighty power of G-d, His Haggadah recounts the indomitable power of the Jewish people.

Here we are, more than three thousand years after we first left Egypt. In those three millennia we have seen exiles and expulsions, gulags and gas chambers, bombings and boycotts. And yet we continue to sit at the Seder. Our families have been forced to wander from continent to continent, but wherever we went, we brought our Matzah with us.

The fact that you and I are alive today is thanks to G-d's miracles. But the fact that you and I are Jewish today is a miracle of our own making. After everything our people has been through, to sit on this night and make a Seder is nothing short of miraculous. This is the story G-d tells on Seder night. He is in awe of us.

This is the inner meaning of the blessing we say after we complete reading our version of the Haggadah:

Blessed are You, G‑d, our G‑d , King of the universe, who has redeemed us and redeemed our fathers from Egypt, and brought us to this night to eat Matzah and Maror. So too, G‑d, our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers…

We are saying, "G-d, we bless you for Your miracles. We are impressed by the wonders You performed. So too, You G-d, cannot help but marvel at the wonder we are performing right here, right now. Sitting here eating Matzah and Maror, Jews sitting at a Seder, is itself a miracle."

At your Seder, go around the table and ask everyone there, "If you look at your family history, does it make sense that you are Jewish today?" You are a living miracle. G-d is impressed with that.

You may not think you are so special. But G-d does. That's what it says in His Haggadah.

Good Shabbos and a Happy and Kosher Pesach,
Rabbi Moss

It could be this idea is based on the Zohar Shemos 40b that says: "
On the Seder night, G‑d gathers His whole retinue of angels and says to them: 'Go and listen to the account of My praise that My children are relating, and rejoicing in My redemption.' This is G-d's Haggadah.

Seder Night, 1946

SELL YOUR CHOMETZ & SEE PESACH SHUL TIMES

Question of the Week

There is a passage in the Haggadah that always confuses me. Just after we read about the four sons, it says:

One may think that [the discussion of the exodus] must be from the first of the month. The Torah therefore says, `On that day.' `On that day,' however, could mean while it is yet daytime; the Torah therefore says, `It is because of this.' The expression `because of this' can only be said when Matzah and Maror are placed before you.

Sorry, can you explain what is going on here?

Answer:

This cryptic paragraph contains a life-changing lesson. Once you hear it you will never be the same again. But first let's understand its plain meaning.

The Haggadah is here establishing the correct time to tell the story of the Exodus.  In a typically Talmudic back-and-forth style, the Haggadah explains:

You may have thought that the Seder should take place on the first of the month of Nissan, because back in Egypt that was when preparations for the Exodus began. But the Torah states: "You shall tell your child on that day, because of this G-d did for me when I left Egypt." "O n that day" means the Seder should be celebrated on the day of the Exodus itself, the 15th of Nissan.

But "on that day" makes it sound like the Seder should take place during the daylight hours. This is not the case. You have to be able to point at the Matzah and Maror and say "because of this G-d did for me when I left Egypt". The Torah commands us to eat Matzah and Maror at night, not in the day. So the story of the Exodus c an only be told at night, when you can point at the Matzah and Maror in front of you.

Like every passage in the Haggadah, this one has many levels of meaning. Here is a story that reveals a profound understanding of an otherwise technical teaching.

It was Seder night, 1946. Rabbi Yisroel Alter had escaped Poland and reached the Holy Land, only to learn that his wife, daughter, son and grandchildren had all been murdered by the Nazis. He sat down with some of his students for the first Seder after the war, a Seder without a family.

We can't imagine the superhuman strength it took for the survivors to make a Seder at that time. We can't imagine the pain of reading the Ma Nishtana and the four sons, when their children were there no more. But they did it.

Rabbi Alter came to the passage, "One may think...." and he paused. Looking at the assembled group of broken souls, he explained the passage in a new way:

After going through a time of great darkness and pain, how do we live on? One may think that you can't start a new life right away. You must wait for a new moon to appear, for time to pass, and when things are different only then will you start to live again.

This is not the case. You can't wait until then. You need to find the strength to live and celebrate "on that day" - right now, today. Even while you are still hurting, you have to awaken your soul and start anew.

You might think that joy can only come during daylight, when the sun is shining and things are good. No. Don't wait around until your mood changes. Force yourself to embrace life now, even when it is still dark. Let your soul shine in the darkness. Whatever is before you, whether you have Matzah, the bread of freedom, or Maror, the bitter herbs, you need to start your new life today.

With these few words Rabbi Alter breathed new life into a broken generation. The raw truth of his words reverberates until this very day. Right now there are many people hurting in so many ways. We can't wait around for things to get better. We have to make it better. Don't delay your new life for the next new moon. Don't wait until you are in the mood to make a positive change. Do it now. Start your exodus today.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Biographical note: Rabbi Yisroel Alter (1895 – 1977), known as the Beis Yisroel, was the fifth Gerrer Rebbe. He rebuilt Polish Chassidism from the ashes. He remarried after the war, and though he was not blessed with more children, his students and followers numbered in the hundreds of thousands.

A Seder Conspiracy

SELL YOUR CHOMETZ & SEE PESACH SHUL TIMES
www.nefesh.org.au/pesach

Question of the Week:

Whoever wrote the Pesach Haggadah seems to have made a major mistake. The name of Moses does not appear once in the entire Haggadah! How could the main man of the Exodus who confronted Pharaoh, brought down the plagues, and led his people out of slavery be completely left out of the story? It would be like doing Macbeth without Macbeth, or Star Wars without Luke Skywalker. I have a conspiracy theory: This was no mistake. The Haggadah was written by an anti-Moses faction who tried to write him out of history. That way they would take over the priesthood and control the Temple. Like it?

Answer:

That's a fantastic conspiracy theory. Really fantastic.

But the question is a good one. Moses' absence from the Haggadah is indeed a mystery. To solve it we need to examine the evidence and figure out who wrote the Haggadah. There is one prime suspect.

Here are the clues:

1. There is a biblical command to tell your children the story of the exodus every year on the night of Pesach
2. The Haggadah was written as a basis to tell the story
3. The first time a Haggadah would have been needed was the year after the exodus
4. One year after the exodus, the children themselves didn't need to hear the story, as they were there!
5. There was only one family whose children were not present at the exodus, and so needed to hear the story
6. It would seem that the first Haggadah would have been made by this family

So whose family was it? Who was the only Israelite who himself experienced the exodus, but his children did not?

It was none other than Moses himself.

Moses' wife and children were not in Egypt and did not experience the exodus first hand. Moses married Tzipora and had two sons in her homeland of Midyan. When Moses returned to Egypt to free his people, his family remained in Midyan, and only joined the Israelites in the desert after the exodus.

So the only person who needed a Haggadah that first year to tell his kids the exodus story was Moses. He wrote the first ever Haggadah. And being the most humble man on the face of the earth, Moses left himself out of the story. He understood that he was no more than an instrument of G-d. He took no credit for the exodus.

This is one of the reasons Moses always carried a stick. He was saying, just like a stick is no more than an instrument in the hands of its owner, so too I am just a tool in G-d's hands. It is not I who brought the miracles, it is not I who took you out of Egypt, it is G-d Almighty.

There's no conspiracy here. Just a powerful lesson. We learn from Moses what humility really means. You can be a leader who changes the course of history, and yet still be humble. When you don't take credit for yourself, when you don't need your name mentioned, you have the infinite power of G-d behind you. Humility does not contradict greatness. It is its secret.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

R' Yissachar Dov of Belz

Notes:
- In fact, Moses is mentioned once in the Haggadah. But not as part of the story, just in passing: "The people believed in G-d and in Moses His servant."
- The Haggadah we have today has many later additions from the talmudic sages. The suggestion is that the kernel of the Haggadah was first composed by Moses, and all later additions left Moses out, as he himself did, to convey the message that it was G-d alone who took us out of Egypt.

The Chocolate Quick Fix

Question of the Week:

I envy you. You have faith. I can see how people with faith have clarity and strength that others don't, especially in hard times. I don't have that strength and I want some of it. Is there a quick fix for faith?

Answer:

There is a quick fix for faith. You don't need any proofs or arguments. You just need to eat a piece of chocolate every day. Seriously.

This is an ancient Jewish remedy for strengthening faith. It is a pity so few people know about it, because if they did, their lives would be so much better. And it really isn't so hard. It's as easy as eating chocolate.

But before you eat the chocolate, you have to recite the blessing on chocolate. It goes like this:

"Blessed are you Lord our G-d, King of the Universe, for everything exists by Your word."

If you say these words and actually think about them for a few seconds, you will shift your entire perspective on life. It's not just a piece of chocolate in your hand, it's a piece of G-d's creation. Everything is a piece of G-d's creation. All exists by His word. What G-d says goes. Nothing happens by accident. Nothing exists without a reason. We didn't create ourselves. We are not alone. We are in good hands. Just like the chocolate.

Contemplate that for a minute a day, and you will have the strength to face whatever life throws at you. Because it's not life throwing it at you, it's G-d. Thinking about this on a daily basis will open up the recesses of faith within you. So go eat some chocolate.

Well to be honest, you don't need to eat chocolate. The same blessing is said on a glass of water, a mushroom, a piece of herring and many other foods. Any of them will do. The point is, you have to consume something after saying the blessing. If you want to internalize faith, don't just declare it, digest it.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss
