Is She Worth a Second Date?

Question of the Week:

I met a lovely girl on a blind date last week. We went to the art gallery and had a wonderful conversation. She has everything I am looking for. But she is not for me. There is nothing wrong with her, but I am a very good judge of character and my intuition can quickly assess people. I know when it is right and this time it just isn't. I would meet her a second time just to be polite, but wouldn't that be leading her on?

Answer:

There is a popular theory that we can know all we need to know about a person in the first few seconds of meeting them. It is a great theory. There is only one problem with it. It is rubbish.

A person is more than meets the eye. We are multi-layered. We have thoughts and feelings, memories and dreams, quirks and foibles. Everyone has a story and everyone has a soul. You can't see all this at first glance.

How many times have you been impressed by someone's first impression, only to be disappointed after a few conversations? And the opposite too, how many people have you met and not particularly appreciated, only to be pleasantly surprised after getting to know them better? Even looks are deceiving. A person who you find unattractive at first can grow on you as their full picture unravels.

I am sure you would agree that no one can know what you are all about by meeting you once. The same goes for others. Don't always trust your instincts. They can easily lead you astray.

Maybe I am wrong. Perhaps you do have an amazing sixth sense and can read people on the spot. But is it foolproof? What if you are right 99% of the time? What if you get it wrong only once? Imagine what you could miss out on...

I commend you for taking the plunge and agreeing to meet her the first time. It is not always easy to put yourself out there. But I think you should give it a second chance, and this time switch off the intuition and see what you find. You may discover that you are actually meeting her for the first time.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

A Tough One from a 4 Year Old

Question of the Week:

My 4 year old asked me some hard questions that I wasn't sure how to answer, like, "Why did Hashem make people deaf? Did they do something bad?" I tried explaining that somehow everything Hashem does is for the best even if we don't understand why, but I felt it wasn't the best answer I could have given. Could you guide me how to answer her?

Answer:

No human being is complete on their own. Each one of us has a lack in some areas, and extra powers in others. A blind person may have an extra keen intellect, and a deaf person profound emotional strength. No one has it all. This means we need each other.

If you can see, you can help someone who can't. If you are healthy, you can help someone who isn't. If you have money, you can share it with those in need. And if you have emotional depth, you can support those with weak hearts.

The Talmud relates that the Roman governor Turnus Rufus challenged Rabbi Akiva with the following question: "If G-d loves the poor, why doesn't He supply them with their needs?" Rabbi Akiva's reply was: "To give us the opportunity to save ourselves from Gehenom (hell)".

That Gehenom is a world where no one ever helps anyone else, where everyone only thinks about themselves and cares not for another. We are in this world to do kindness. Every lack that one person has is an opportunity for another to fill it with love.

So let's say all of this in the language of a four year old:

You are a good sharer. When you share your toys with other kids who don't have those toys, you become friends. You can also share your eyes and your ears, by helping someone who can't see or hear. And they can help you too. Then we can all be friends. That's why Hashem created us all with something missing. He is not punishing us for doing something wrong, He is giving us a chance to do something right.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Today is the day, G-d willing, that piling is complete!
Drilling machinery will now be exiting the site and we will be receiving our steel and other materials to produce and form the 'capping beam'.
This is basically a big column of concrete that sits on top of the piles and ties them all together, adding strength and making a solid wall for the basement of the synagogue.
Good Shabbas and G-d bless.

You've Been Caught in the Act

Question of the Week:

My acting career seems to be at a dead end. Every time I come close to a huge role something goes wrong and I miss out. I have tried every avenue I can think of, even changing agents, but it hasn't helped. I am professional, hard-working, dedicated and I believe I have talent (this has been confirmed to me by others too). But I am starting to think I simply wasn't meant to be an actor. Should I just come to terms with being a failure?

Answer:

My friend, there is only one thing you need to come to terms with. You are not an actor. You may be good at acting, but that is not who you are, it is what you do. Stop identifying yourself by your career. You need to discover an identity that is beyond your work. That way, success and failure in your career will not spell success or failure in your life.

In our world of inverted values, a man is called successful because he has made a lot of money. He may have abandoned his third wife, be estranged from his children, have no friends and his dog ran away from him. But he's done well at work, and people say, "I wish I had his luck."

We achieve true success when we succeed in our relationships. If you are a caring friend in times of need, if you treat your parents well, if you are a supportive and understanding spouse, a devoted and caring parent, then you are a success. Those who contribute to the community, not just money but time and effort, those who have developed happy relationships with G-d and man, they are real success stories.

As long as we identify ourselves with our profession - I am an actor, a sales person, an IT technician - then we are pinning our success as a person on our career success. But it's not true. We are not defined by our job. What we do to make a living is different to what we do to make a life. We work to make a living. But to make a life we must love, connect, serve a purpose and find meaning.

This is the gift of Shabbos. One day a week we step out of our workday roles and return to our true self. We are not staff members but rather members of a community; we are not employers or employees but rather brothers and sisters, children, parents and friends. We are not working for a boss to do our job, but rather working for The Boss to fulfill our mission.

You may be great at doing your work. Or maybe not. But it's more important to be good at being human. When it comes to being human, even a failed businessman can be the greatest success story, and a struggling actor can be a star.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

We faced a small hiccup when one of the main cables on the drilling machine snapped! These things happen, but due to the holiday season it took some days to remedy. We are finally back on course this week and will be finished drilling all piles by the end of next week G-d willing.

I hope everyone had a great holiday period. Wishing everyone the best and hoping to provide more exciting update next week :-)

Is It Time to Move?

Question of the Week:

It seems that my family are the modern day wandering Jews.  We have moved from city to city 5 times in the last 7 years. We like where we are now sort of, but we are always slightly on the edge (or not so slightly), making a living thank G-d, but unhappy with the schools, unhappy with the medical care, the weather, etc.  We have even gone back to the place we just came from, only to leave again when things don't work out.

We need to be in one place for our 13 yr old daughter, but I don't know which place it should be. What should we do?

Answer:

It is very clear where you need to be. You need to be where you are right now. G-d has put you there for a reason. Though you think you chose to be there, in fact you were directed there from above.

One of the names of G-d in Hebrew is Hamakom, which literally means The Place. There is a divine hand that leads us to the place we are in. So when the Talmud says, "Do not argue with Hamakom," it doesn't only mean you shouldn't have gripes with G-d. It means you need to make peace with the place G-d has put you. You are there because you couldn't be anywhere else.

You may never be completely happy with any place you live. But you will be able to settle, as soon as you decide that this is it, this is home, this is where G-d wants us to be and we are going nowhere. The very thought that you can always move, makes it likely that you will always move. But the acceptance that you are in the right place will itself help you see that you belong there.

Now of course, sometimes we do need to move. But only with a very clear message from heaven that it's time to go. Until then, put all your energy into making your little corner of the world a place where you and your family feel at home. Find out why you are needed there. And put your trust in Hamakom.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss
