Are You Waiting for Your Next Life?

TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS www.nefesh.org.au/EOFY

Question of the Week:

What is the difference between a rabbi and a Rebbe? I have been reading up on the Rebbe and he was obviously a great man. But what makes someone a Rebbe and not a regular rabbi?

Answer:

There are many differences, too many to list here, but one is this: A rabbi answers questions, a Rebbe answers people. A rabbi hears what you say with your mouth, a Rebbe hears what you are saying with your soul.

I'll explain what I mean.

A teenage boy once asked the Rebbe, "Do we believe in reincarnation?"

The Rebbe's answer was short and cryptic:

"Yes we do believe in reincarnation. But don't wait until then."

This seems a puzzling response. Wait until when? The boy asked a simple enough question, which could be answered with a yes or no. What did the Rebbe mean by "don't wait until then"?

I think the Rebbe was responding to something more than the technical question. The Rebbe knew how to answer the person, not the question. Most of us respond to a question posed to us. The Rebbe would respond to the person behind the question. With his insight he would identify where the question is coming from, and address the underlying issue rather than just the one presented.

When this boy asked about reincarnation, he was not asking about some abstract theological concept. He wanted to know if this lifetime is all there is, or there is more. The possibility of reincarnation changes the way we look at life. We were here before, and so some of the events that happen to us now may be leftovers from a previous life. And we may live again, which means that we get another chance to complete unfinished business from this lifetime in the next.

This seems to be what the Rebbe was warning the young boy. Reincarnation doesn't mean procrastination. Don't use it as an excuse to put off to your next life what you need to achieve in this life. Indeed we believe in the re-embodiment of the soul, which means we believe in second chances. But maybe this life is the second chance. Don't leave it to next time.

This is the power of a Rebbe. A regular rabbi, when asked such a question, would start quoting mystical sources and explaining complex doctrines. But the Rebbe, in a ten second exchange with a teenage boy, taught a practical and comprehensive worldview. Live this lifetime as if it's your last. You may have past lives, and you may have future lives, but don't wait until then. Do it now.

Do You Believe in Aliens? Video

Question of the Week:
Do You Believe In Aliens? Changing the conversation about faith
Do You Believe In
Aliens? Changing the conversation about faith

You know me, I always feel guilty about something. Since my mother died, I feel guilty every time I have fun or even go to the hairdresser, as if I have no right to enjoy my life now that her life has ended. I know this isn't healthy but I can't seem to let myself live. Are there any Jewish teachings on this that might help me?

Answer:

The only thing you should feel guilty about is feeling guilty. Not only is it holding you back, it's holding your mother's soul back too.

The connection we have with a loved one reaches beyond this lifetime. It is a soul connection, a bond deeper than the physical and temporary confines of the body. Just as souls never die, so too our relationship with a soul never ceases. The conversation between souls continues, albeit on a more subtle and internal way.

And it goes both ways. Your mother still loves you, and at times you will be able to actually feel her closeness. She also feels what you are going through, and is impacted by your state of mind. If you aren't happy, if you aren't thriving and moving ahead in life, it hurts her. Especially if it is her memory that is causing your stagnation.

But when you forge ahead and live on, when you make the most of your time down here and do good for yourself and others, she gets nachas, and her soul can be at rest. You are not forgetting her when you live on, you are honouring her. When you find your way forward, her soul can find peace. She is only free to move on to her place of rest when you feel free to move on in your own life journey.

Rather than feeling guilty about feeling guilty, take a step towards feeling good, that you are alive and that you can continue the path that your mother set you on. If you are living a life of meaning and purpose, you can even allow yourself to enjoy going to the hairdresser, guilt-free. Your mum would be proud of that too.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

The Corner of the Table: Will I Stay Single Forever?

Question of the Week:

In my family, it is strictly forbidden for any unmarried person to sit at the corner of the table. We were told from a young age that if you do sit at a corner, you will never get married. To this day I can't bring myself to sit at a corner, or let anyone else do so. Is this a Jewish belief?

Answer:

This belief is widely held, and has been handed down for generations in a range of cultures. If your grandmother is Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Rumanian or Ukrainian then there is a good chance she grew up with this superstition. The fact that many Jewish families originate from those countries may explain why so many share this belief. But it doesn't come from a Jewish source.

Judaism forbids the adoption of beliefs and practices that are not sourced in our own tradition, unless they have a logical reason behind them. So if a black cat passes in front of you, we don't believe that means you will have bad luck. But walking under a ladder may bring bad luck, if you bump the ladder and someone falls on you.

So avoiding ladders makes sense, avoiding black cats doesn't. What about table corners?

An intensive statistical study into the single status of corner sitters has yet to produce any conclusive results. But using logic alone, one could argue that sitting at a corner may actually make you more marriageable, not less. It depends on your motive.

If the table is crowded, and you choose the corner spot to make more room at the table for others to sit, then you are a great candidate for marriage. Making space for another is the first step in any relationship.

On the other hand, if you sit there because you can't make up your mind which side to sit on, then perhaps this indicates an indecisive personality. Someone who finds it hard to take a position on anything, who is never here nor there but lost in between, might have a harder time committing to a relationship. That is a corner you don't want to get stuck at.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss
