Isn't This Disgusting?

OPEN TO ALL AGES (BASIC & ADVANCED CATEGORIES)

Question of the Week:

I'm 11 years old and I'm studying about the specific laws of the Temple in Jerusalem. I learned that it was built in the most beautified way, with gold, silver and copper. Then I learned the laws of the sacrifices which were brought in the Temple, and that blood was sprinkled (and maybe splattered?) all over the place. I'm wondering how that makes the Temple beautiful to have animal's blood everywhere? It seems to be ugly and a bit disgusting. I understand that it was a mitzvah to bring sacrifices, but how is blood on the floor BEAUTIFUL?

Answer:

Sometimes, beauty appears in the most unexpected places. The blood in the Temple is one of them.

The Talmud explains that there was a drainage system in the Temple. The blood of the sacrifices was washed into gutters that flowed out of the Temple and into the Kidron River below the Temple Mount. This allowed the sanctuary to remain clean.

So the Temple was kept clean. But what about the Kidron? Was that just a putrid dump?

Not really. This bloody river made excellent fertiliser. Garden owners of Jerusalem would pay good money for the mineral-rich water of the Kidron to irrigate their gardens. Exquisite plants and colourful flowers adorned the city thanks to the messy gutters of Kidron.

There's something we can learn from this little piece of Temple trivia. You choose how you view the world, as a garbage dump or a garden of G-d. Where one person sees a sewer, another sees a flowerbed. As they say, when life gives you a bloody river, make fertiliser.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Who Is Adina?

Question of the Week:

My name is Adina. I have always been proud of having a Hebrew name, and I love its meaning ("delicate"). But someone asked me who the original Adina was. And I had no idea what to answer. Is it a biblical name? I don't remember hearing of an Adina in the Torah. So where is my name actually from?

Answer:

You may be surprised to learn the origins of your name. The first Adina was none other than the wife of Lavan the Aramean. That is Lavan the famous fraudster, sorcerer and crafty crook, about whom we read in the Haggadah on Pesach: "Lavan wanted to destroy everything."

Lavan was not known for his good moral values. And yet, this piece of work was the father of Rachel and Leah, the righteous matriarchs of the Jewish people. How did such a shady character have such wonderful children? This was most likely due entirely to his delicate wife, Adina.

All we know about her is her name. And that's all we need to know. Adina the delicate one. Don't be fooled by her soft and gentle nature. With her subtlety and quiet strength, she had the power to counter her husband's negative character, and bring up children who enlightened the world.

So that's where your name comes from. The delicate woman who singlehandedly instilled her children with good character, and thereby shaped the Jewish future forever. She did it without her husband's support. Imagine what a likeminded couple can do.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Sefer Hayashar, quoted in Seder Hadoros Year 2164. See also Year 2217, where it mentions another Adina, wife of Levi, daughter of Yovav ben Yoktan. This second Adina, unlike the first, joined the Jewish people, which is probably how the name became popular. We can only imagine how Leah felt when her son Levi married a woman with the same name as her mother.

Who Invented Chess?

Question of the Week:

I once heard that the game of chess was invented by King Solomon. Does it say that somewhere?

Answer:

There is a legend that King Solomon came up with the game of chess to keep the minds of his military commanders sharp. And nobody could beat him at his own game.

He often played against Benayahu, his chief of staff. And the king always won. Always, that is, except once.

Benayahu was once playing against the king, and things looked like he was about to be checkmated. Frustrated at always losing, Benayahu took advantage when King Solomon left the game for a moment to investigate a commotion happening out the window. Benayahu surreptitiously removed Solomon's horse off the board. When the king returned he didn't notice the missing piece, and Benayahu was able to turn the game around to his advantage and finally win.

Solomon was crestfallen. No one had ever beaten him at chess before. Wanting to learn from his mistakes, he reconstructed the game in his mind, move by move, to see where he went wrong. But it didn't make sense. A piece was unaccounted for. There was a missing horse!

Solomon knew what must have happened. He could have immediately confronted Benayahu for his dishonesty. But he didn't. He understood the value of someone admitting wrongdoing themselves. So the king waited for the right moment. And it eventually came.

One fine day King Solomon caught a thief attempting to steal treasure from the royal palace. He called the rabbinical judges of the high court, and in the presence of Benayahu asked them, "What should be done to someone who dares to steal from the king?"

When Benayahu heard this, he was sure the king was referring to his stealing the king's chess piece. Terrified, he confessed to cheating and begged for mercy.

The king was happy. Benayahu had owned up to his deceit, without Solomon ever accusing him of anything. And the king remained undefeated at his beloved game, the game of chess.

I guess you could say King Solomon checkmated Benayahu, yet again.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Source:
This legend is found in a collection of Jewish tales from rare sources called "Beis Hamidrash," authored by Aaron Jellinek in 19th century Vienna. Though this fascinating work is found in the Frierdiker Rebbe's library, the author and his sources cannot always be relied on as true to Torah. Some of his stories, like this one, are viewed as apocryphal. Nevertheless, the singular affection Torah sages expressed towards the game of chess may indicate it comes from a lofty source...
