Are You Waiting to be Asked?

Question of the Week:

My grandfather used to always give beggars on the street a coin, and he would say it is better to give before you are asked. I am now realizing that many of his sayings were actually based on Jewish wisdom, and am researching the sources. Is there something about giving without being asked?

Answer:

Your grandfather was a mystic, even if he didn't know it.

Giving tzedakah is always a good thing to do. But there is an extra power to charity when you give it without being asked. When the giver initiates a donation, it arouses divine kindness from above even more than when you respond to a request to give.

This is illustrated by the fact that G-d's name, the name that denotes divine kindness - Yud-Heh-Vav-Heh י-ה-ו-ה  - is recreated when you give charity.

The coin that is given resembles the Yud ............................................................י
The five fingers of your giving hand are the Heh, the fifth letter in the alphabet.......ה
The arm reaching out to give resembles the Vav .................................................ו
And the five fingers of the hand receiving the gift is the final Heh..........................ה

This name of G-d is extremely powerful. It is through these four letters that all blessings flow down to the world. When we give charity, we spell out these letters and invite G-d's light into our lives.

But to spell G-d's name correctly, you need to initiate the giving. If you wait for the poor man to stretch out his hand to you, it still generates blessings, but the letters of G-d's name are jumbled, and the reciprocal divine kindness is therefore delayed.

That's why your grandfather didn't wait for the needy to come to him. A proactive giver gets G-d's name the right way up. And that's why he lived such a blessed life. When you give unsolicited gifts, you receive unsolicited blessings from above, way more than you could have asked for.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

There are so many little things occurring throughout the building all at the same time that I'm just going to have to focus on one this week. A big thanks to our hard labourers for the terrific job they are doing excavating by hand what will be the rear entrance ramp to the Shule. A big effort indeed!

Shabbat Shalom,
Brent

What's Really Bugging this Husband?

Question of the Week:

OK you need to adjudicate this one between me and my wife before it gets out of hand. We keep a kosher home, and though that is not my thing, I am fine with that. She checks the lettuce for bugs, and I think that's crazy. I am not anti-religion but I am anti-fanaticism and to me this is going too far. There are bugs in everything, we can't help eating them. Can you explain to her that she is going overboard?

Answer:

Bugs are not kosher. Eating a bug is the same as eating bacon, and to keep kosher properly you have to examine any fruits and vegetables that are prone to infestation, and remove any bugs before eating them.

But there are some bugs that are so small, they can't be seen by the naked eye. We eat them all the time. And Jewish law allows it. You don't need to take out a microscope to check your food. Only bugs that are readily visible to the naked eye are a problem.

Now you might say: That's inconsistent! If it isn't kosher, it isn't kosher, no matter how big or small. How can you say 'see no evil, eat no evil'?

Here is where our Torah is so down to earth. G-d only expects from us what is possible. We cannot avoid every microscopic mishap. While we have to be vigilant in our observance, and can never turn a blind eye to wrongdoing, we are only human and not expected to be anything more than that. So if the human eye can't see the bug, we don't need to try to find it with a magnifying glass. No need to look for invisible problems.

Your wife is not crazy. As long as she is not scanning lettuce under a microscope, she is doing the right thing. You, on the other hand... It seems you might be looking for problems that aren't really there. Perhaps scrutinize her a bit less harshly, and try to find out what is really bugging you.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

Has Your Wife Got an Ego Problem?

Question of the Week:

My family very much enjoyed being at your Shabbos table, thanks again for the invite. I meant to ask you a question that has bothered me for years. It's about prayer. Looking through all the praises of G-d's greatness in the prayer book, it seems to be a big ego trip for G-d. Is G-d so insecure that he needs his creations to pray to him 3 times a day, telling him how great he is?

Answer:

We loved having your wonderful family over. You should be very proud of them all.

But one thing disturbed me. Your children behaved really well, but I am a little concerned about your wife.

Every time your wife gave your son anything, like a piece of chicken, a drink, or a toy to play with, she insisted that he say thank you to her.

Your son acquiesced, and each time she told him to, he said thank you. This went on throughout the meal, at least a dozen times.

This is a worry. Is your wife so insecure that she needs her son to constantly acknowledge her? Is it normal to almost force someone to thank you, for even basic needs like food and drink, just to build up your own ego?

I think you get my point...

Your wife was being an exemplary mother, teaching her children gratitude and humility. When you are given something, big or small, you must acknowledge the giver. Her request to be thanked was not for herself, it was for her children. She got nothing out of her son's thanks, other than the pride in seeing her child developing his character. But your son was learning a precious lesson.

G-d trains us to thank Him, like a devoted parent who wants the best for His children. He doesn't need our thanks as much as we need to thank Him. Because everything we have, including life itself, is a gift. The minute we forget that, the minute we take even the simplest pleasures for granted, we stop living a life of wonder.

Parents who do not impart the trait of appreciation to their children are not only making life difficult for themselves, they are robbing their children of a basic tool for life. Only when I see everything as a gift, can I be happy with what I have rather than miserable about what I don't have.

So we should thank G-d for everything, even for asking us to thank Him. Gratitude is a gift too.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss
