Live Stream Seder?

CORONAVIRUS Q & A

Here is a selection of questions received this week. For more see the daily videos www.facebook.com/nefesh.shul

NOTE: The answers below reflect the current positions of halachic and medical authorities in Sydney, Australia. Opinions may vary from place to place. Refer to your local authority before making any conclusions.

LIVE STREAMING THE SEDER?

Question: Is it true that rabbis have allowed Seders to be live streamed this year so elders can see their family?

Answer: In a word, NO. Live streaming is forbidden on Shabbos and Yomtov. There are certain specific circumstances when an exception is made, where life is in danger. If you think that applies to you or anyone you know, ask your rabbi.

CAN WE GO PESACH SHOPPING?

Question: We are a young couple and we need to do our Pesach shopping. But going out of the house is risking our lives. So what are we supposed to do?

Answer: Unless you are infected with the virus or had close contact with someone who is, you are permitted to leave your house for your basic needs. This includes buying food. No one is suggesting that walking on the streets will kill you. The idea is that limiting our contact with others will slow the spread of the virus. We may get it anyway, but by mostly staying home we stagger the infection rates, which avoids overburdening the health system.

So you can do your Pesach shopping while following the current guidelines and stay safe. And being that you are young and healthy, maybe call an elderly person who can't go out and do their Pesach shopping for them.

ARE WE COWARDS?

Question: My grandfather risked his life in communist Russia by going to shul, even though he knew he could be killed for doing so. Shouldn't we be willing to do the same and go to shul now, even if it risks our life?

Answer: Jewish law stipulates that when an evil regime attempts to quash Jewish practice, we should be willing to die rather than give in. The communists wanted to uproot Judaism, so your grandfather valiantly took up the fight, and kept his Jewishness despite the risk. He was a hero.

Today's enemy is totally different. We are fighting against an indiscriminate disease that doesn't care about your beliefs. The virus sees no difference between a religious devotee praying in a house of worship or a sports fan cheering in a stadium. It will infect both equally. So there is no mitzvah to risk yourself or others by gathering to pray. On the contrary, it is a mitzvah to listen to the rabbis in your community. If they are saying that public prayer is forbidden, it is going against the Torah to ignore them.

Communism was fought by being defiant in the face of the threat and praying in shul. This virus is fought by staying at home and praying at home. A family that stays together, prays together.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

The CoronaShabbos Message

WHO AM I?

I move fast, and news of me spreads even faster.

I grab the attention of the entire world like no one else can.

I affect you, even if you don't believe in me.

I come from one place in the world, but I reach every corner of the world.

I started with one nation, but I take over all nations and all religions.

Because of me, you will change everything you do. All of your habits and routines will be disrupted. You will have to rethink your entire day, and change all of your plans.

Families will become closer because of me. Communities will become tighter because of me.

I will make you less selfish and more sensitive. You will care for the weak and the vulnerable because you know I am coming.

I will make you turn to G-d. I will remind you what's really important.

I am mightier than your wealth, smarter than your technology.

The world has not seen anything like me before.

Because of me, things will never be the same.

But you need to wake up. There's no time to waste. You need to realise I am coming, and I'm coming now.

Who am I?

I am Moshiach.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My dear friends, this Shabbos is an amazing opportunity. Shuls around the world are closed. YOUR HOME IS THE SHUL. YOU ARE THE RABBI, REBBETZIN, CHAZAN, KIDS COUNSELOR. MAKE YOUR HOME A SANCTUARY THIS SHABBOS.
If you don't usually keep Shabbos fully, try to do it this Shabbos. Prepare all food and SWITCH OFF YOUR PHONE AND ALL MEDIA FROM CANDLE LIGHTING TONIGHT UNTIL NIGHTFALL TOMORROW.
And if you do usually keep Shabbos, make it even deeper this week. DON'T TALK ABOUT THE NEWS, TALK ABOUT TORAH, TELL MEANINGFUL STORIES, SING TOGETHER.
If you are all alone this Shabbos, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. THE ENTIRE JEWISH PEOPLE IS WITH YOU. WE ARE THINKING OF YOU. WE ARE SINGING WITH YOU.
Let's make this Shabbos the one that we have all been waiting for, the one that will bring Moshiach.
Good Shabbos
Rabbi Moss
What's More Contagious than COVID-19?
CORONAVIRUS ADVICE FOR NEFESH COMMUNITY
(the following applies to Sydney at the moment)
  • Use common sense and follow medical advice from official sources, without losing perspective. Panic and hysteria are not helpful.
  • If you are healthy you should continue attending Synagogue as usual, ensuring proper hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and/or hand sanitizer, which is provided at the shul entrance and in the bathrooms.
  • If you are experiencing symptoms of the COVID-19 virus you should not attend Synagogue and should seek medical advice. Details of the symptoms and other relevant information can be found at - https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov
  • If you have recently travelled or have had contact with someone with the COVID-19 virus, please seek medical advice before attending synagogue
  • The elderly or those with compromised immune systems should avoid crowds
  • Following advice of health authorities, we will avoid hand shaking and direct contact between people
  • Kiddush food will be served by gloved volunteers
  • Please cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or your arm
  • IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS VULNERABLE OR ALONE, REACH OUT TO THEM AND OFFER SUPPORT. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS QUARANTINED, CALL THEM AND BE A FRIEND.
Question of the Week:
This coronavirus thing has really thrown me. I feel like I've lost all sense of certainty. No one knows what will happen next. How do we stay sane when we don't know what's lurking around the corner?
Answer:
It is not that we have lost our sense of certainty. We have lost our illusion of certainty. We never had it to begin with. This could be majorly unsettling, or amazingly liberating.
This tiny virus of 125 nanometres* has sent the entire world into chaos. All of our plans are up in the air, markets are going crazy, entire countries shutting down, and we have no clue what the future holds.
But that is always the case. We never know what the future holds. We only think we do, and keep getting surprised when things don't pan out the way we expected. Now the mask is off. We have to admit our vulnerability.
What will happen next? We don't know. Our experts don't know. Our leaders don't know. Only G-d knows. And that is the point. Only G-d knows.
Close your eyes and feel the uncertainty, make peace with it, let yourself be taken by it. Embrace your cluelessness. Because in all the confusion there is one thing you know for sure. You are in G-d's hands.
Keep calm. Panic and fear are also contagious. Take every precaution as advised by health authorities. Wash your hands well. And every time you do, remember whose hands you are in.
Good Shabbos
Rabbi Moss
