Can I Miss My Soulmate?

NEFESH MEMBERSHIP OPEN NOW register and book seats HERE

Question of the Week:

A friend and I have been going back and forth in regards to dating. She is in no rush to get married, but feels pressured to "get out there" lest she miss out on her soulmate. I say what will be will be, and if it is meant to happen then it will. Can one's soulmate be "stolen" if they don't act in haste?

Answer:

It is most certainly possible to miss out on your soulmate.

The Talmud discusses certain times of the year when Jewish law does not allow weddings to take place. One of them is during a festival, like Pesach, as we do not want to mix celebrations together. However the Talmud says that while you can't perform a wedding during a festival, you can make shidduch - a match between prospective mates with a view to get married. The reasoning the Talmud gives is that while a wedding can wait until after the festival, if you delay making a match someone else may beat you to your soulmate.

But how can one person take a soulmate destined for someone else?

Through raising your soul to a higher level.

If you work on yourself, improve your character and refine yourself to a new spiritual plane, then your soulmate changes. A new improved soul gets a new improved soulmate.

And who will be that new improved soulmate? Someone whose original soulmate has either fallen to a lower spiritual level and doesn't deserve them anymore, or is dithering around, wondering if they are ready to get married...

This teaches us an amazing principle in soulmate searching. The two things that can cause you to lose your soulmate are spiritual decline, or lack of real effort. And the two things that will most help you find your soulmate are self-improvement, and determined effort.

Sit around and nothing will happen. But as long as you are out there, and as long as you are working on yourself, you will find him.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

A Family in Crisis PLEASE HELP

It has come to our attention that a certain family in our community is in urgent medical and financial crisis. Due to the magnitude of their needs, their situation warrants a wider community response.

The parents of this family were working fulltime until the wife was struck with serious medical issues.

She suffered a number of strokes and underwent brain surgery, leaving her with physical and cognitive impairment and emotional instability.
She has diabetes and unfortunately had to have one of her legs amputated. She is losing her sight. Her kidney function has also been affected.
She has recently been in and out of hospital for serious wound care.
She has had great difficulties with her prosthesis. As a result she is not mobile. She needs to see a private doctor and have private physiotherapy to facilitate her rehabilitation.
She has carpal tunnel in both hands and needs surgery for them.
All of this is complicated by the fact that they have no private health coverage, as they can not afford it. They do not have the funds for much needed private medical services: doctors, tests, physiotherapists etc. Having quality care for her at this moment is vital due to her complicated medical issues.

They have children, some themselves with medical issues, one in particular with a serious condition, which necessitates her to be in hospital for considerable amounts of time. This child does have private health care, but even so there is a significant shortfall in finances.

The husband works full time. He is himself not in the best of health. Whenever his wife is in hospital he must be with her as she cannot emotionally manage without him.  In those circumstances, he misses work and does not get paid.

There is therefore a serious shortfall between their weekly income and their expenses. They are falling behind in a very big way.

A small group has been formed to assist this family including Mrs Hadassa Bension, who has been employed as a rehabilitation carer for the wife, and is helping with medical management and counselling.

Because of the family's complex and chronic financial and medical situation, we are appealing to the wider community for help to ensure the situation does not deteriorate any further.

We want to help this family in the most dignified, respectful, responsible, organised and transparent manner. To that end, all funds will be directed to Tikva Inc. - a tax-deductible charity organisation run efficiently with meticulous and up to date records by Mrs Devora Markovits and her board. She will pay all this family's bills and expenses directly to ensure that their needs are met.

We urge you to help as much as you can by donating to the account below, and thank you so much for your assistance in this very worthy and urgent cause.

Mission Fulfilled, Now What?

FAMILY IN CRISIS - PLEASE HELP see below

Question of the week:

I have a fear of dying. But it expresses itself in a weird way. I have read stories of people doing one mitzvah and then dropping dead, because that one good deed was their life mission. So now every time I do something good, I think maybe this is my last. This freaks me out and it isn't good. Should I try not to fulfill my mission so I can live, or do good deeds and die?

Answer:

There are two types of workers: employees and contractors. A contractor is there to do their job, and that's it. As long as I have completed the tasks given me, as long as the items on my to-do list are all ticked off, I have done my bit and I can go home.

But an employee has to work not until the job is done, but until the day is over. It is not enough that my immediate tasks are completed, I have to seek out more work and ensure every moment of the day is productive. Otherwise I am short-changing my employer.

We live in G-d's big factory, and we are all workers, each with a specific role to play, in the grand scheme of creating a world of goodness. And we have a choice. We can either suffice with fulfilling our obligation alone, and no more, or we can go beyond that, and refuse to rest until the job is done, until the world overflows with goodness.

If you choose to work like a contractor, only seeking to fulfill your mission, you should know, once your job is done, you have nothing more to offer, and it is time for you to leave this world. But if you choose to be an employee, to serve G-d not for your own self-fulfillment but for His sake, then there is no end to the good you can do. And so even once you have fulfilled your personal mission, you go on to more and more tasks until your day is up.

Never say I have done enough. And don't be scared of running out of good deeds to do. There's still plenty of work to do. So do it.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss

PS. There are rare cases when a soul is sent down here with one single mission to achieve, and once that is done, they are free to go back to heaven.  Sad for us, these special souls leave us early, and we should be thankful for ever having met them.

Lessons from the Mighty Mosquito

SEE BELOW FOR FULL TISHA B'AV PROGRAM

Question of the Week:

I am emailing you at 3:30am because I can't sleep. Nothing very dramatic, but there is a mosquito in my room that keeps buzzing in my ear and driving me crazy. So I got thinking, why did G-d create mosquitos? What possible purpose could they serve other than annoying people when they are trying to sleep?

Answer:

Be careful who you call annoying. That mosquito may deserve more respect than you think.

Indeed, the Talmud has some harsh words for mosquitoes. It says that while all creatures contribute to the grand scheme of nature, the mosquito is one exception. It is a consumer, but not a giver. It survives by sucking the blood produced by others, but doesn't itself produce anything useful for the world. To take and not give back is the exact opposite of holiness.

And yet, a mosquito may in some cases be better than a human being. Because even when a mosquito annoys you or bites you, it is just doing what it was created to do. But when a person annoys and bites, causes pain and fails to make the world better, then we are lower than a mosquito, because we are neglecting to fulfill the mission for which we were created. A blood-sucking, sleep depriving mosquito is just doing the job of being a mosquito, but a selfish, lazy or spiteful person is not what a person is supposed to be.

In this way, the mosquito does actually make a valuable contribution to the world. It teaches us this very lesson, that being a good mosquito is not being a good person. Unless you want to be worse than an annoying insect, you had better be contributing to the world in a positive way. A day cannot go by without doing a mitzvah. We are not on this earth to eat and party and sit around watching our life go by, we are here to create a buzz about goodness and fix the world. The mosquito is doing his buzz, you do yours.

For that you might need to get some sleep.

Good night,
Rabbi Moss

Baby Naming Rights?

With much joy we announce the birth of a baby boy! Sholom Zochor tonight at our home from 8:15pm. Bris (TBC) this Wednesday 7:30am at Nefesh.
Wishing everyone only simchas always!
Rabbi Aron and Nechama Dina Moss

Question of the Week:

Our baby is now almost six weeks old, but we haven't officially named her. We have a problem. I always wanted to name her after my grandmother. But my wife doesn't like that name because she says it sounds ugly. She wants some other name which is nice, but I think it lacks any real meaning for the family. Doesn't it say somewhere that the father has the right to choose the firstborn's name?

Answer:

I'm not sure you want to know the answer to that.

There is indeed a custom in some communities of alternating the right to name a child between the parents. According to one Ashkenazi custom, the mother names the firstborn child, the father the second and so on. But some Sefardi communities have the father choosing the name for the first son, and then the mother the second son, while all daughters are named by the mother.

In your case, following either system, your wife gets to name this child.

But there is a different approach. These systems were only enacted to avoid intractable arguments between parents. That's not the ideal way to name a child. It is far better that both agree on a name together rather than one having to reluctantly concede to the other's wish.

The need for consensus is indicated in the writings of Kabbalah, which state, "When a father and mother give a name to their child, they are given a prophecy to choose the right name to fit the soul of the child." This implies that the prophecy comes when there is agreement between the parents, and both are happy with the name.

This is just the first of many disagreements you will have with your wife in parenting your child. Inevitably there will be times when you will want to do things one way, and your wife will have a different approach. You could alternate the decision making, so one day you get your way and the kids are allowed to drink Coke, and the next day your wife is in charge and they only get water. One day bed time is optional and the next it is strictly enforced.

But think what this will do to your child. She needs parents who are united and working as a team, with one voice and one standard. When there are cracks in the parents' unity, kids slip between those cracks.

Consider your child's needs before your own, and give her a name that is meaningful, comfortable, and acceptable to you both. May this be the first of many harmonious compromises you make for your children.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Moss
